DIY Toothpaste

Since going plastic free I decided to further the experiment and try homemade toothpaste. It's so simple. Good to know if you're fresh out of toothpaste and can't get to the supermarket.

Ingredients:
1/2C coconut oil
2-3 tbspns of baking or bi-carb soda
15-20 drops of peppermint oil or any oil you prefer
2-3 sachets of xylitol or stevia
1x glass jar

Method:
1. Soften the coconut oil in microwave for about 15 seconds.
2. Mix in baking or bicarb soda with coconut oil in a glass jar. If you melted the coconut oil completely let cool/set slightly and then stir the baking powder in. This will prevent separation.
3. Add oil and stevia/xylitol. I chose not to use stevia with new studies showing sweeteners can effect your insulin levels and sugar cravings.
4. Leave to cool completely.

When ready to use, place on your toothbrush and brush away. Make individual jars for each person in the household. I haven't been doing this for very long however I will give you feedback from my dentist at the 6-month mark.

Any feedback or recipes you'd like to share - comment below as I'd love to try them. Or if you've been doing this for a while, how is your dental hygiene? Does your dentist give the thumbs up?
